The UMTS (Universal mobile telecom system) represents 3rd generation (3G) standard for cellular system. It is based on the existing Global system for mobile (GSM) communication core network (CN) but opted for a totally new radio access technology in the form of a wideband version of code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA). Fast internet, video streaming, multimedia messages, mobile e-commerce mobile entertainment has made it extremely popular. In this research paper, for the coverage estimation in a WCDMA based UMTS network, the link budget of UMTS has been analyzed. Actually link budget is the accounting of all the gains and losses from the transmitter through the medium to the receiver in a telecom system to obtain cell range.
Path loss as well cell range obtained from link budget varies for different types of conditions. Increases bit rates; noise rise & loading are many of the factors for these variations. Different types of path loss model can be used for calculating cell range but in our project we have applied the Okamura-Hata curve is an approximation of radio wave propagation characteristics based on aggregated data obtained in actual tests of propagation characteristics between a base station and mobile stations in various areas. |
