Abstract:
Remote controller is one of the applications of electronics to increase the facilities of life. In this
project, an infrared remote controlled home automation system has been developed to make our
life even easier. It gives one the ability to control multiple home appliances. The system has been
designed in such a way that it can be used to control the home appliances using any infrared
remote even the television remotes. The device supports two of the major infrared remote
protocols NEC and RC5. The circuit has been designed based on PIC microcontroller 16F877A.
To receive the infrared signal an IR receiver has been interfaced with the microcontroller. To
control the home appliances relays have been used as power switches. To control the intensity of
light/fan a MOSFET has been interfaced with the microcontroller using optocoupler. The
program for the system has been developed using C programming language and compiled by
CCS C compiler for the system. The whole system has been interconnected and the developed
program has been burnt into the microcontroller using PicKit2. The performance of the system
has been studied and it is found that the system works properly without any interruption of noise.
The coverage range of the remote control has been measured and found that it works properly
from a distance of 7 m.
