Akter, Taslima
Plagiarism is a well-documented problem in the academic writing of students. This paper reports on a study aimed at investigating the forms, causes and remedies of plagiarism in the graduate students’ academic writing. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with five teachers to know about their own ways of defining plagiarism, tracing techniques restricting this academic theft. A questionnaire based on Likert scale was administered to 20 graduate students of two private universities to gather information about the forms or ways, causes and remedies of plagiarism. They were also given home assignments to write so that we could trace out their forms of plagiarism as proof. The data across the three tools revealed plagiarism is prevalent to a large extent in the students’ academic paper which is a big threat to the academic integrity. The growth of internet use, lack of awareness about academic writing and plagiarism issue, deliberate copying through internet without acknowledgement, bad paraphrasing, students’ unwillingness to work hard, lack of proper application of university plagiarism policy etc. have been found to be the prime agents of graduate students’ plagiarism. By raising enough awareness among students and teachers, giving them proper training on academic writing as well as plagiarism issue and its rules to avoid it, and adopting plagiarism checker, we can reduce this academic dishonesty and subsequently originate creative writers. Suggestions for further research in wider timeframe and with more respondents are also suggested to know more about the academic document and plagiarism issue.

Bidushi, Basmala Taharat
Majority of students in Bangladesh studies in public Bengali medium schools. In most of those schools, the only English language textbook is English for Today. Young learners, studying in primary level, are prone to accepting and internalizing concepts and ideas from textbooks without question. Therefore, stereotypical or discriminatory representation of gender may affect the mindset of young learners negatively. In order to investigate how women are portrayed linguistically and semiotically through the content of the English for Today books for primary level, this study employed critical discourse analysis as the framework for data analysis. The findings of this qualitative content analysis reflected traditional, stereotypical, and in some cases even impractical representation of women in the English for Today books for Classes I-V both linguistically and semiotically. This study hopes to make writers, illustrators, evaluators, publishers, syllabus designers and curriculum developers aware about the inappropriate representation of women in the primary level English for Today books.

Universities play an important role in ensuring that undergraduates are equipped with language skills relevant to the workplace requirements (Singh, 2014). Every university offer English courses which are supposed to meet the language needs of the students (Chowdhury & Haider, 2012). The private universities offer basic or fundamental courses of English language to enhance the language proficiency of students, and it is important to identify to what extent the courses are fulfilling the needs of students. The study attempted to investigate the current nature of the English foundation courses that are offered in Bangladeshi private universities. The present study aimed to focus on how much the courses are meeting the students’ needs for language competency. The present study explored students’ expectations from the English foundation courses and the usefulness of the foundation courses. The main methodologies employed in this study were questionnaire survey and interview. Data was collected from 3 private universities located in Dhaka city. For the investigation both close and open-ended
questionnaire was provided to 150 students and 6 teachers were interviewed. Theoretical framework was based on relevant researches by Khan (2000), Chowdhury (2009), Chowdhury & Haider (2012), Singh (2014) and De Silva & Devendra (2014).
The main findings of the study shows positive feedback from the respondents. The study
provided some insights through the undergraduates’ feedback. From the findings of the study it was identified that the existing condition of English foundation courses in the private universities are regenerating to cope up with the students’ needs for personal improvement, academic success and for job purposes.
