dc.description.abstract Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness is a magnum opus of twentieth century literary studies. No longer confined to the category of modern literature the novel has become a source of versatile criticism. After Achebe’s indictment of Conrad as a racist in 1975 a controversy arose among literary scholars regarding the accurate interpretation of the novel. This paper investigates the controversy and tries to figure out the dominant issues that were taken up by various critics. Besides, it attempts to clarify the complexities involved in the evaluation of the text. Focusing on the postcolonial interpretation of the text this paper also examines the role of literary discourse in the formation of ideological conflict en_US
